ARTech Building
This project was a follow-up to the
Peralta Community Garden project
that was finished in 2000. Panoramic
Interest is a group of architects that invited
me to create three benches in the shapes of native
Californian animals for the front of the “ARTech Building”
in Berkeley. My goal was to create small sculptural forms
for pedestrians to use. They are on a human scale and offer
a transition between pedestrians and the building entrance.
I designed the benches to match the building by using some
of the facade colors. The Earth colors and unglazed texture of the
mosaic tiles refer to Nature and wild animal camouflage. The benches
are curved to infer flowing water. They offer a pleasing counter-balance to
the straight lines and sharp corners of the urban setting. They are
are a very popular addition to the ARTech entryway.
